What to Pack in Your Hospital Bag

We have some very exciting things going on in my family right now! My sister is expecting her first child, which would be the second grandchild in our family. When she asked me what I took to the hospital, it brought back memories of the birth of my son. I was so excited to install the car seat, pack our hospital bag, and put away his itty-bitty clothing. I didn’t know the hospital would send me home with so many things or that they were included in our bill! So my #1 tip is to ask for and take home as much stuff as you can! If you’re a minimalist like me, you will appreciate this list of must-haves.

Must-haves for mom and dad:

  • Toothbrush and paste

  • Deodorant

  • Shampoo and conditioner

  • Makeup

  • Hairbrush

  • Headband and hair ties

  • Blow dryer and straightener

  • Contacts/glasses

  • Cell phone charger

  • Slippers or socks

  • PJs

  • 2 outfits (loose clothes) - I mistakenly brought tight, maternity yoga pants. Trust me, you will want a loose pair of pants, especially if you have a C-section! Old Navy has some comfortable and affordable options.

  • Nursing bra or tank

  • 2 newborn-size baby outfits (preferably onesies or side-button shirts that don’t bother their belly button)

  • Baby socks (if their outfit doesn’t have booties attached)

  • Baby blanket

  • Dad’s 2 outfits and PJs

  • Breast pump (so they can show you how to use it and kick-start your milk production)

  • Car seat (most hospitals are able to inspect the installation before you leave)

The hospital will provide (make sure you ask for these things and take home with you):

  • Halo sleep sack

  • Pacifier

  • Hat and onesie

  • Diapers

  • Tucks

  • Squirt bottle

  • Pads

  • Underwear

  • Lanolin

  • Gel breast pads - you might have to ask for this

  • Bottle + formula

  • Manual breast pump - you might have to ask for this

I hope this helps! If I forgot something important, please share in the comments below. Best wishes for a safe delivery and healthy baby!
